New Street Tree Request System!
I still don't have a street tree and had to go and request one again. NYC has a new request system at: http://http://gis.nyc.gov/parks/forms/. You can track the status of your request through 311, so hopefully I'll have better luck this time around!

Spring Tree Care
Every day BxC students are caring for the street trees in front of our building. They water the trees, aerate the soil and pick up litter. They also talk about what they notice, record observations, ask questions, and collect data about their trees.

KT's Noticings
We've been doing a lot of work to take care of our trees and to talk about things that can hurt our trees. Each time we go outside, we see dog business in our tree pit. We also see paper, squashed cigarettes, and lots of other trash too. We think we'll make signs for our trees this week, so people will know that it is not OK to put litter in our tree pit.
We are also seeing some bugs around our trees. We read a book about beetles that live inside a tree trunk. They make holes to lay their eggs. The holes keep getting bigger as they beetle grubs eat. Then disease can get into the tree from the holes. When we were outside today, we saw lots of holes in our tree. There was one big hole in the bark, and Bryce saw a line inside the hole. We also saw some little holes too. But we didn't see any bugs.
Could there be beetles in our tree? Could there be other bugs living in our tree? Why don't we see any bugs in the holes? Matthew thinks there are a lot of beetles hiding. Scarlett thinks the bugs might be hiding deep inside the trunk, under the bark. We'll keep looking...

Our sign is still here and not gone,YEAH!!!!
We checked out the trees in our neighborhood and decided on one that's in front of our neighborhood's window. A tall tree. Lots of beautiful leaves, yet sad looking. Seems to be a pretty old tree. We are trying to figure out what type of tree this one is. Brian place our sign in front of the tree and we said a little prayer that on Sunday morning, May 17, 2009, our sign would still be there and the tree would be respected.
Yeah, I can say that yes, our sign was still there and standing. But sad to say the area around the tree, was again litered with animal business and paper. But hope is not lost and we will continue our duty to protect and clean our chosen tree.

Our family loves nature, especially trees... We have this great old tree in front of out house that we care for. We also have a nice little garden and as a family we try to take care of our Earth..., Having trees around is very important and we as humans need to care and love them, just as we love our own bodies.... The roots of a tree is our feet, the truck is our body, our arms , hands and head the branches with leaves....

It's Street Tree Action Day!
Welcome, BxC families to Street Tree Action Day!
We are so excited for students to be able to share the hard work they have been doing to take care of the street trees outside of the school. We are looking forward to having our families take home a tree care kit. We hope that you are able to adopt a tree in your own neighborhood. Together we can make a cleaner, greener Bronx!
On Saturday, May 16th, students, families and staff celebrated the street tree stewardship of our students and began a Bronx-wide street tree action project. BxC families will be adopting a street tree on their block, caring for it during the hot months between May and October. They will water their tree, keep it clean and aerate the soil, so the roots get lots of air and water. If all of our students adopt a tree on their home block, BxC families will help care for 100 trees across the Bronx. That makes a big impact!
At Street Tree Action Day, students taught their families how to use different tools to take care of street trees, together families made a sign for their adopted tree, and they also signed up to become authors on this blog. Ian Jack, a forester with the Parks Department, led street tree tours on our block to talk with families about some of the hazards that street trees face. Students and families also planted flowers that were bought with money raised during a bake sale at family conferences.
On their way out, families received a tree care bucket filled with tree care tools, gloves, information about tree care and lots of other goodies. Families will take their tree care kits and all of their knowledge back to their neighborhoods where they will help keep the Bronx green!
